Data entry jobs from home in the UK: real roles and scams

Genuine remote work

Genuine data entry jobs from home exist in the UK, but they rarely look like the adverts: they are usually admin, order-processing or records roles with normal working hours, a typing test and a contract, often hybrid rather than fully remote. Adverts promising high pay for simple typing with no interview – or asking for a fee – are among the most common job scams. This guide shows where real data entry work is, what employers test and how to spot the fakes.

What is a real data entry job?

Data entry means keying information into a system accurately: customer records, orders, invoices, survey responses, stock data. In UK job adverts it usually sits inside a broader admin role – “administrator”, “data administrator”, “order processor”, “records assistant” – rather than appearing as pure typing. Our guide to genuine work from home jobs covers the other entry-level remote roles.

Job title to search What you do Remote?
Data administrator Maintain databases and CRM records, run simple reports Often hybrid
Order processor / sales administrator Enter and check orders, update customers Hybrid or remote
Accounts assistant (data entry) Enter invoices and receipts into accounting software Often hybrid
Medical or legal records assistant Update case or patient records under strict confidentiality Mostly on site
Freelance data tasks Short projects: tidying spreadsheets, cataloguing products Remote, irregular

What skills and tests do employers ask for?

  • Typing: many employers ask for a speed of around 40 words per minute or a keystroke test, with very high accuracy.
  • Spreadsheets: sorting, filtering, simple formulas and lookups in Excel or Google Sheets.
  • Attention to detail: a short checking exercise is common – spot the errors in a list.
  • Confidentiality: data protection basics; some roles require a background check.
  • Software: accounting packages such as Sage, Xero or QuickBooks are a plus for finance data roles.

Tip: free online typing tests and spreadsheet courses let you put a measured typing speed and specific spreadsheet skills on your CV – far stronger than “good IT skills”.

How much do data entry jobs pay?

Employed data entry and admin roles pay at least the minimum wage – £12.71 an hour at 21+, £10.85 at 18–20 from April 2026 – and many pay somewhat more for experience or specialist software. Freelance data tasks are paid per project and vary widely. An advert promising £300 a day for “simple copy and paste” is not describing a real wage.

What do data entry scams look like?

Real data entry job

  • Named employer and admin-style job title
  • Typing or skills test, then interview
  • Contract and payroll
  • Office hours, often hybrid

Data entry scam

  • “Earn £100s a day typing from home”
  • Hired instantly by chat
  • Fee for software, training or registration
  • Paid via an app balance you cannot withdraw

A newer version asks you to “complete data tasks” in an app, then demands a deposit to unlock payment. Another sends a cheque for “software” that you must partly refund. Both are scams – see our work from home scam checklist.

Questions about data entry jobs from home

Are data entry jobs from home in the UK real?

Yes, but mostly as admin roles with normal hours and a contract, often hybrid. Pure “typing from home” offers with high pay and no interview are usually scams.

Can I get a data entry job from home with no experience?

Entry-level admin roles and temp work are possible without experience if you can show a tested typing speed, spreadsheet skills and accuracy.

What typing speed do I need for data entry?

Many employers look for around 40 words per minute with high accuracy; some use keystroke-per-hour tests instead.

Do I have to pay for data entry software or training?

No. A genuine employer provides the software and training. Any request to pay is a warning sign.
