Evening jobs from home in the UK: 8 options that fit after 5pm

Part-time and evenings

The evening jobs you can really do from home in the UK are live chat and customer service shifts, online tutoring, transcription and captioning, appointment setting, out-of-hours IT support, content moderation, proofreading and virtual assistant work for clients in other time zones. Employed shifts give you a fixed wage and contract; freelance work lets you choose your hours. Below are eight options with their typical hours, what you need and how each is paid.

Which evening jobs can you do from home?

Evening work from home is real when the work itself happens outside office hours – customers who contact companies after work, students who study after school, clients in other time zones. These eight options meet that test. For contracts, rights and tax on a second job, see the main guide to part-time and evening work from home.

Which evening job should you choose?

  • You want predictable income: an employed chat or customer service contract with fixed evening shifts.
  • You already work full time: freelance transcription, captioning or proofreading – you take on only as much as you can manage.
  • You are good at a school subject: tutoring pays best per hour, though bookings drop in school holidays.
  • You have technical skills: out-of-hours support often pays more than daytime rates.

Employed shifts pay at least the National Minimum Wage – £12.71 an hour at 21+ from April 2026 – plus paid holiday. Freelance work has no minimum, so work out your real hourly rate after the first week.

How do you find evening jobs from home?

  1. Search with shift wordsCombine the role with “evening”, “twilight”, “weekend” or “part time” – for example “live chat evening remote”.
  2. Filter part-time listingsStart with Careertela’s part-time jobs and customer service jobs.
  3. Check the exact hoursAsk for the shift pattern, minimum weekly hours and whether weekends are required before you apply.
  4. Prepare for a typing or role-play testChat and customer service employers usually test typing speed and how you handle a difficult customer.

Which evening job offers are scams?

Evening job seekers are a favourite target. Be suspicious of offers that arrive unasked by WhatsApp or Telegram, pay for “liking videos” or “rating products”, or ask for any deposit, kit fee or payment to withdraw your earnings. Evening “data entry” with high pay and no interview is another common hook. Our work from home scam checklist covers the tests in detail.

Never pay to start work, never move money through your bank account for an employer, and never send ID documents to a chat contact before a contract.

How do you make evening work sustainable?

  • Set a hard finish time so sleep does not suffer – especially if you also work days.
  • Keep a separate work space, even a corner of a table that is cleared afterwards.
  • Check your main contract for rules on second jobs, and the Working Time limit of 48 hours a week on average across all jobs unless you opt out.
  • Tell HMRC and Universal Credit about the extra income where needed – the main guide explains tax codes for second jobs.
