The remote jobs that really offer evening and part-time hours in the UK are mostly in customer service and live chat, online tutoring, transcription and captioning, and out-of-hours support for companies in other time zones. Employed roles give you a contract and at least the minimum wage; freelance work gives you more control over when you work but no guaranteed pay. This guide compares the options, shows where to find them and explains your rights on a second job.

At a glance
- Most evening remote work is customer service, live chat, tutoring, transcription or out-of-hours support.
- Employed part-time roles pay at least £12.71 an hour at 21+ (April 2026) with holiday pay.
- Night work (11pm–6am) is limited to an average of 8 hours in 24.
- A second job usually gets a BR tax code: 20% tax on all of it.
- Paying to “unlock tasks” is always a scam.
Which remote jobs offer evening and part-time hours?
Work that can be done in the evening from home has one thing in common: the customer or the deadline is not tied to office hours. These are the roles where that is genuinely the case.
| Role | Typical hours | What you need | How it is paid |
|---|---|---|---|
| Customer service / live chat adviser | Evening and weekend shifts, 16–25 hours a week | Quiet room, reliable broadband; laptop and headset often supplied | Hourly, employed |
| Online tutor | After school, roughly 4pm–8pm, plus weekends | Strong subject knowledge; often a DBS check | Per lesson, usually self-employed |
| Transcription and captioning | Any time, deadline-based | Fast, accurate typing; good listening | Per audio or video minute, freelance |
| Out-of-hours IT or technical support | Evenings and nights for companies in other time zones | Some technical experience | Hourly or salaried, employed |
| Appointment setting / inside sales | Late afternoons and evenings | Phone confidence | Hourly plus commission – check the basic rate |
| Content moderation | Shift-based, including nights | Resilience: some content is distressing | Hourly, often via outsourcing firms |
Data entry is often advertised as evening work, but genuine data-entry jobs are usually office-hours admin roles. Evening-only “data entry from home” adverts deserve extra checking – see our guide to genuine work from home jobs.
Should you look for employed or freelance evening work?
Employed part-time
- Contract, fixed shifts, minimum wage
- Paid holiday: 5.6 weeks a year pro rata
- Workplace pension with employer contributions once you earn enough to be auto-enrolled
- Less freedom to choose your hours
Freelance or self-employed
- You pick tasks and times
- No minimum wage, no holiday pay, no sick pay
- You register for Self Assessment above £1,000 a year
- Income can drop to zero in quiet weeks
Freelance platforms advertise “work whenever you want”, and that part is true. What they rarely show is the effective hourly rate once you count unpaid time: finding tasks, tests, corrections and waiting. Work it out for your first week before you rely on it.
Which evening work suits your situation?
| Your situation | Best fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Full-time day job, want extra income | Freelance transcription, tutoring, or weekend chat shifts | Flexible amount of work; nothing to cancel if your day job gets busy |
| Parent or carer, free after bedtime | Employed evening customer-service contract | Predictable shifts and pay you can plan around |
| Student | Tutoring or part-time chat roles with term-time contracts | Hours that drop in exam periods |
| Night owl or prefers quiet hours | Out-of-hours support or moderation night shifts | Night shifts sometimes pay more than day rates |
| Need steady income quickly | Employed part-time role, not freelance platforms | Freelance income takes weeks to build |
Where do you find evening and part-time remote jobs?
- Use the right search wordsAdd “evening”, “twilight shift”, “weekend”, “part time” or “flexible hours” to the job title – for example “remote customer service evening”.
- Filter for part-timeOn Careertela, start with part-time jobs and customer service jobs; on the government’s Find a job service filter by hours.
- Check where applicants may liveRemote jobs from abroad often hire only in certain countries. The location line of each advert tells you.
- Read the shift pattern before applying“Evenings” can mean 5pm–9pm or 6pm–2am. Ask about minimum weekly hours and whether shifts rotate.
What are your rights on part-time and night work?
Part-time employees must not be treated less favourably than comparable full-time staff: the same hourly pay, pro-rata holiday and the same access to training. The rules are summarised on GOV.UK – part-time workers’ rights.
- Holiday: 5.6 weeks a year, worked out on your hours – someone working 3 days a week gets 16.8 days.
- Breaks: a 20-minute rest break if you work more than 6 hours in a day.
- Night work: night time is 11pm to 6am unless your contract says otherwise; night workers must not average more than 8 hours in 24 and must be offered a free health assessment (GOV.UK – night working hours).
- Under 18: young workers cannot usually work at night at all and are limited to 8 hours a day and 40 a week.
Working from home costs: the flat £6-a-week tax relief that employees could claim for working from home ended on 6 April 2026. Your employer can still pay you a tax-free allowance for home-working costs, so ask what they offer.
How is a second evening job taxed?
Your tax-free personal allowance (£12,570 in 2026/27) is normally used by your main job. A second employed job then usually gets the tax code BR: basic-rate tax of 20% on every pound, with no allowance. That is correct, not a mistake – unless your main job pays less than the allowance, in which case HMRC can split it between jobs if you ask.
Freelance evening income is different: it is not taxed at source. Up to £1,000 a year of self-employed income is covered by the trading allowance; above that you register for Self Assessment and pay tax through your return. Our guide to side hustles and tax walks through the steps.
Universal Credit: earnings from any job, employed or freelance, must be reported and reduce your payment. Check the effect with your work coach before you start.
How do evening “task” scams work?
Many people looking for evening work receive messages offering pay for liking videos, rating products or “boosting” apps. The first tasks pay a few pounds to build trust. Then you are told to deposit money – often in cryptocurrency – to “unlock” better-paid tasks, and the balance you see on screen can never be withdrawn.
- Unsolicited job offers by WhatsApp or Telegram from a “recruiter” you never contacted.
- Pay for simple online actions such as likes, reviews or ratings.
- Any deposit to access work or to withdraw earnings.

Questions about part-time and evening work from home
What evening jobs can I do from home in the UK?
The most common are customer service and live chat shifts, online tutoring after school hours, transcription and captioning, appointment setting and out-of-hours support for companies in other time zones.
Are there night shift jobs from home?
Yes, mainly in technical support, content moderation and customer service for businesses that run around the clock. Night workers are protected by the 8-hour average limit and must be offered a health assessment.
Can I find part-time work from home with no experience?
Customer service and live chat roles are the most common entry point; employers train you and often supply equipment. Expect an online assessment and a video interview.
How many hours is part-time?
There is no legal definition. In practice part-time remote roles range from about 8 to 30 hours a week; evening contracts are often 16 to 25 hours.
Do I pay more tax on a second job?
Not more in total, but a second employed job usually uses the BR code, so 20% is taken from all of it because your allowance is used by your main job.
Are evening data entry jobs from home real?
Genuine data entry is mostly office-hours admin work. Evening-only data entry adverts that need no interview, or ask for a fee or a deposit, are usually scams.
