Bookkeeping jobs from home in the UK: qualifications and first clients

Genuine remote work

Bookkeeping is one of the most realistic skilled jobs to do from home in the UK, either employed by an accountancy practice or as a self-employed bookkeeper with your own clients. It is not an entry-level job without training: employers and clients expect an AAT or ICB qualification or equivalent experience, and self-employed bookkeepers must be supervised for money laundering rules before they start. This guide sets out the route step by step.

What does a bookkeeper do?

Bookkeepers record a business’s financial transactions and keep its books accurate: entering sales and purchase invoices, reconciling bank accounts, running payroll, preparing VAT returns and handing clean records to an accountant at year end. Almost all of it happens in cloud software, which is why it works so well from home. It is a step up from the entry roles in our guide to genuine work from home jobs.

Which qualifications do you need?

There is no legal licence to be a bookkeeper in the UK, but clients and employers look for recognised qualifications:

Body Qualifications Good for
AAT (Association of Accounting Technicians) Bookkeeping and accounting qualifications at levels 2 to 4 Employed roles and progression towards accountancy
ICB (Institute of Certified Bookkeepers) Bookkeeping qualifications at levels 1 to 4, practising certificate Self-employed bookkeepers
Software certifications Free adviser training from Xero, QuickBooks and Sage Showing hands-on software skills to clients

Many people study part-time or online while working, and some start as an accounts assistant to gain experience at the same time.

Do you need to register for money laundering supervision?

Yes, if you offer bookkeeping services to clients as a business. Bookkeepers are covered by the Money Laundering Regulations and must be supervised before they start trading – either by a professional body such as AAT or ICB, or by HMRC if you are not a member of one. HMRC explains the process on GOV.UK – register with HMRC for money laundering supervision. Supervision means carrying out checks on your clients and keeping records.

Do not skip this step. Trading as a bookkeeper without supervision is an offence, and it is one of the first things a serious client may ask about.

Should you work employed or freelance?

Employed at a practice

  • Salary, training and support
  • Supervision handled by the firm
  • Remote or hybrid is common
  • Best route straight after qualifying

Self-employed bookkeeper

  • You choose clients and hours
  • You arrange AML supervision and insurance
  • Professional indemnity insurance strongly advised
  • Income depends on winning clients

How do self-employed bookkeepers find clients?

  2. Use software partner directoriesCloud accounting providers list certified advisers that small businesses search.
  3. Partner with accountantsMany accountancy practices outsource bookkeeping and refer small clients.
  4. Explain Making Tax DigitalSince April 2026 sole traders and landlords with qualifying income over £50,000 must keep digital records and send quarterly updates – many need help.
  5. Register your own businessYour income above £1,000 a year goes through Self Assessment – see side hustle tax for the basics.

Not straight away for clients. Start with a qualification such as AAT or ICB and, ideally, an accounts assistant role to gain experience before taking on your own clients.

Do I need to register with HMRC to be a bookkeeper?

For money laundering supervision, yes – with HMRC or a professional body such as AAT or ICB – before you start offering bookkeeping services. You also register for Self Assessment as self-employed.

Which software should a bookkeeper learn?

Xero, QuickBooks and Sage are the most common in UK small businesses; each offers free training and certification for advisers.

Are freelance bookkeeping jobs from home well paid?

Rates depend on qualifications, niche and services such as payroll or VAT. Qualified bookkeepers with steady clients generally earn well above entry-level remote roles.
